E-wallet review: What is 1Payz?

Esther Ng

When we think about window shopping, need-based shopping, spontaneous shopping or bagging the latest shopping promotions — most Malaysians would immediately think of 1 Utama, one of the largest shopping complexes in the nation situated in Bandar Utama. The tagline for the multiple award-winning regional mall is, “It’s all in one”- as it consists of 700 shops.

1 Utama has its own e-wallet known as 1Pay, a bonus for those who frequently visit the mall. This is an e-wallet that’s only applicable to shops within 1 Utama, which yields exclusive deals, points and promotions for 1Pay users.

1Pay is a bonus for members of the ONECARD Loyalty program, as one must apply for a ONECARD or ONECARD Kids+ membership before they can activate their 1Pay accounts. ONECARD memberships are valid for 3 years at a fee of RM20 and 5 years at a fee of RM30. The benefits of becoming a ONECARD holder includes: booking preferred parking spots, cheaper parking fees, birthday rewards, exclusive deals, free rides on 1 Utama’s shuttle bus and becoming eligible to collect UPoints (the points that come after every ONECARD or 1Pay purchase). ONECARD users who have kids aged 12 and above are able to sign their kids up for ONECARD Kids+, the validity of the card follows the corresponding parent’s ONECARD expiry date.

ONECARD Kids+ comes with all the same functions and benefits as a ONECARD membership except for parking privileges. Children can redeem UPoints and enjoy extra privileges specially curated for them such as a free gift upon joining the membership, free kiddie rides for the first 3 hours, discover great promotions/discounts on selected stores, birthday rewards, access to The Club at Bukit Utama sports facility via UPoints on weekdays and be informed of exciting kid-friendly activities held in 1 Utama!

Parents are also able to load funds into their kids’ ONECARD Kids+ accounts and monitor their kids’ spendings without too much worry. The minimum UPoints reload is RM10. Parents may reload UPoints into their children’s  ONECARD Kids+ via cash or credit card at any customer service centre within 1 Utama. This is a great way to teach kids the value of cashless transactions!

1Pay functions much like any other e-wallets; it allows users to attach their credit/debit card to it, transactions are secured through QR codes, points can be redeemed after each transaction, users can transfer/receive funds from other 1Pay users, and it has the capacity to hold RM1,500 (excluding UPoints). It is free for download at the APP store and Google Play.

Follow these steps to activate your 1Pay account:

  1. Download the app and log in with your ONECARD account details

  2. Set your security question and payment PIN

  3. Activate your 1Pay e-wallet

  4. Start shopping to collect UPoints

The purpose of collecting UPoints is to offset purchases at 1 Utama, as 1 UPoint equates to RM0.01. This is applicable to any ONECARD participating outlet in the shopping complex. If users do not earn enough UPoints, there’s a partial redemption that is available for them! For example, if a user purchases a pair of shoes at RM100, he can redeem 5000 UPoints (RM50) and pay the balance with his 1Pay account. The physical card of ONECARD and the digital form of 1Pay are interchangeable as both reflect the same balance that is powered by one’s credit/debit card.
